THE AULD SPELLS - I WANT YOU BACK/ANOTHER WAY (DOUBLE SINGLE REVIEW)

The Edinburgh based dreampop band return with their latest releases 'I Want You Back'/'Another Way' and they bring dreamy tones and shimmery sounds in one and then deliver some grungy yet atmospheric sounds in the other.  You will find yourself completely falling right into their captivating sound.  They bring a generous mix of those familiar sounds of the 60s.

'I Want You Back' brings a woozy 60s Motown style, with influences ranging from girl groups of the 60s, rock n roll and some doo-wop sprinkled over the top.  Beginning with a simple drum kick and percussion, setting off the 60s rhythm nicely allowing all other parts to fall right into the beat and that essence of rock and roll underpinning the core rhythm.  The shimmery chimes and guitars adding in the glittery elements, the bands signature dreamy atmospheric sound comes in, dancing eerily yet captivating and pulls you right into their world.  In comes Tommy's distinctive vocals, bringing his low tones that perfectly contrasts the lighter vocal tones from Michelle Vidal providing those airy moments; the subtlety to her vocals lifts the track with a floating atmosphere that knits together the deep sounds and ethereal elements perfectly.  'I Want You Back' was an international with Michelle recording her parts in Paris and Tommy recording in Edinburgh.

The B-side track 'Another Way' slows it down, bringing the rock and roll rhythm with a bluesy, soulful sound; a Northern waltz beat leads the track as the song tells the story of a relationship that on hindsight was never going to end well.  Beginning with a melodic grungy guitar riff dripping in reverb setting the tempo and bringing a heavier melancholic sound.  A darker approach to their usual uptempo shimmery dream pop sound.  The deep beat that accompanies both the guitar riff and Tommy's velvet vocals, sends a wave of moodiness through the ears of the listener.  The piano plays into the beat with the staccato chords subtly but just enough to echo through the rhythmic section.  Their vintage and old school sound delivers a raw edge that truly shows their authentic style.

This is a great double sided single that you fall right into, it is completely captivating holding your attention through out. Their sound is so familiar that it takes you on a trip back in time, yet there is a freshness to their music that is so unique, injecting their own signature sound that keeps pulling you back in.
