ELLUR - DREAM OF MINE // SINGLE REVIEW
'Dream of Mine' is a gentle track, filled with pensive moments, a gritty guitar melody that transports you, the drums brings almost a sense of peace, they are not rushing the song but surround the rest of the instrumentation warmly, making you fall completely into its rhythm. We then have the vocals from Ellur, there is a softness to her voice that injects the emotion of what the song is and needs, there is a hint of calm contrasted with strong feelings of frustation, as Ellur mentions how the song came to be:
‘Dream of Mine’ was written a very long time ago about feeling selfish for wanting to pursue a career that requires a lot of sacrifices. I was feeling insecure and worried my long-term partner would decide that being with a musician would be too much for them. I’m very much interested in the conflict of being a woman and the fact my first priority is not to settle down, get married and provide emotionally for a family. It’s an expectation so woven into society and I find it interesting that you don’t really hear male rock stars apologising for wanting success and you feel that in every part.
You can certainly hear those feelings pull through, juggling those feelings of hope, chasing your dreams and uncertainty "but i'm running for the chaos to be seen under lights, And you wonder where we fit in to this dream of mine". The way she conveys her story and the emotion tied within, is what captures you and pulls you in. The instrumentation does not overpower, you hear the Americana/country rock tones within the track and one of my favourite moments is the guitar melody in the chorus, that is almost like a response to Ellur, a beautiful moment of music. There is an anticipation that hangs on through out as Ellur is desperately wanting the relationship to work out and have their partner there to support "Want you to wanna be here in this dream of mine". The track builds not in volume but depth, becoming more emotional as the song goes on and you fall deeper in to this track.
The indie artist from Halifax draws influences from The 1975, The Cure, CMAT, Sam Fender and if you are a fan of any of these artists then Ellur will be the perfect new artist for you to add to your playlist.
'Dream of Mine' is the final preview into her upcoming album 'At Home In My Mind' set for release on the 6th February, which you do not want to miss.
