WHYTE NOISE - WHAT WE LOVE TO DO // ALBUM REVIEW
Whyte Noise are the dynamic son-and-father duo Ciaran and Gordon Whyte from Paisley and they have recently released their debut album 'What we Love To Do'
This track is the lead single from their album and what a first track to open. Heartfelt lyrics with that infectious Scottish trad rhythm that will get anyone up on their feet for a dance. The lyrics delve into that feeling of being far away from home and you are reminiscing about the old days. Ciaran’s voice draws you in, accompanied by the instrumental both bring a warmth that you feel right at home. The instrumental section at the bridge where the whole band comes together for a moment of pure trad excellence.
Track 2: Throw Me a Penny
Continuing the upbeat heartfelt sound. This one has a slight more rockier vibe, still keeping the trad undertones. This one dives into the world of busking and that is goes much deeper than just simply busking, seeing the same faces in the same places. They may through in a penny but it’s the connections that mean more. For me the chorus on this track is one of my favourites, the way the song builds lyrically and instrumentally really captures the emotions and feelings that Ciaran expresses.
Track 3: The Whisky Song
The song title really speaks for itself, if you are wanting to get to know the Scottish whisky’s give this song a listen. A sole piano and Ciaran’s vocals, bringing a comedic element as he increasingly speeds up going through the whisky’s of Scotland. See if you can catch all the whisky’s mentioned.
Track 4: I'm Wi You
This is just a feel good Scottish track, that celebrates love and happiness. The harmonies in this one are a stand out, the drums bring a little bit of those island sounds. “I’m wi you, you’re wi me, me n you, we’re meant to be” just gets stuck in your head.
Track 6: The Granny Song
Now this track feels like an ode to ‘you cannae shove your granny aff a bus’. Those influences came straight through from the first guitar note. The first track on the album where Gordon takes the lead vocals. A little acoustic number with an addictive melody “ah the thingmy aff ma thingmy would you fix while you’re here, use the thingmy out the thingmy drawer, a new one's affy dear”. What sounds like a polka style rhythm from the guitar that will get you tapping along.
Bringing back that jazzy influence, with an upbeat piano melody. A little a song about sparking up a conversation with a stranger and you think of all the best bits in your life and become sentimental.
Track 8: Birdsong Bedtime
A cosy track with a depth of emotion, reflecting on all those you care about and your own journey. The accordion melody in this song creates a warmth providing gentle heart-rending layer accompanying the poignant lyricism. There is a feeling of longing and desire to the vocals and lyrics that will stick with you long after the song finishes.
Track 9: The Football Song
This is a song for all those passionate football fans out there, the vocals, guitar and drums bring a sense of familiarity. This is a song that would fit well within a chant as well as providing introspective trip down memory lane, remembering the days going out with your friends to play and that game of football was the most important part of the week.
Track 10: Beauty of Glencoe
A heartfelt track that pretty much sums up the feeling of Scottish scenery from the soft vocals to the quaint instrumentation, the melody provides those little moments of magic as it paints that picture of the scenery. A little ode to Glencoe and your love. The whistle melody at the bridge is a personal favourite.
Track 11: Balance
To end the album the duo give us a rockier side to their sound, still bringing their Scottish influences, the track has a more grittier feel with a deeper instrumental feel, thicker guitar riffs, delicate organ chords can be heard giving the track that fuller breadth, the heavier drums give us that driving rhythm that will get the crowd going. This song feels more instrumental driven, Ciaran’s vocals appear to deliberately fall in and out creating that space for the instrumental to come through and take the lead for majority of the song. Lots of magical instrumental moments in this one.
What We Love to Do by Whyte Noise is a lively and heartfelt tribute to Scottish music, blending modern energy with those classic traditional folk sounds combining a deep love for cultural roots, which radiates through out from start to finish.
