ABNORM - GIANTS
Newcastle based alt rock group have recently released their 3 track debut EP 'Giant', a record that is inspired by anger and regaining power. The EP brings an mix of dark atmospheric rock with elements of ethereal pop both intertwine and the band take you on their emotional journey with them.
'Gasoline' - The vocals from Abbie Rose is what instantly stands out in this track, her entrancing voice floats effortlessly over the instrumentation. The guitars blending with her voice in a way where they don't get lost but create that atmospheric haunting sound. Pulling you into the lyrics and feeling every word that Abbie sings, a girl who loses her faith in the world, which builds an obsession to desperately seek the answers. You feel this anger and frustration build slowly at first, but as soon as the bridge comes in this is where that feeling becomes more intense and gritty, the band becoming fuller with more depth as the song reaches its climax.
'Petals' - Brings a more pop rock vibe, the guitars in this one sit back through the verses. There is still those haunting tones vocally from Abbie and allowing her to take the lead of the track without the instrumentation overpowering. The delicate moments in her voice through the verses and being able to switch into her rockier sound in the chorus, flowing effortlessly with the instrumentation. The calm moments mixed in with the intense rock elements creates a song that will stick with you, when it pulls back for the verses and those guitar melodies feel brings a warmth sitting under the vocals, my favourite moment in the track.
'Giant' - This one kicks off with those gritty rock sounds instantly, you are thrown right into a punching guitar and drum rhythm that brings a fierce sound and add to that Abbie's vocals it becomes the perfect combination and continues to accelerate with no slowing down, becoming this outlet to scream out your feelings, which is exactly what the lyrics convey. The lyrics delve into the feelings of what it is like to be a girl in the world and feeling belittled and you can't fight back so the anger and frustration builds. This is definitely a song to sing at the top of your lungs too. Those short almost staccato hits from guitar and baseline that just sit off the beat are the attention grabber for this track.
What a debut EP this is and this is only the beginning for them. Looking forward to watching them build their sound and fanbase.
Blending hard hitting riffs with emotive story telling, these guys channel a sound that brings both the intensity and a vulnerability that will connect with anyone who listens.
