SPOOKY GOOSE - WHERE'S MY TITLE? (EP Review)

Spooky Goose are a Kent based indie band that take their influences from bit pop, indie rock and indie America. The band was formed in spirit 4 years ago by band members and friends Will and Joe, who began writing songs together.  After continuous writing and the addition of Cam the drummer the band are ready to hit the ground running and have released their second EP 'Where's My Title?' a few months ago.

This dreamy mix of indie rock, 90s bit pop and indie America you are guaranteed to fall into its whirlpool of unusual sounds and a gritty edge.

Kicking off the EP is 'Lover Boy' a track that starts out with some mellow, dreamy psychedelic guitars that bounce gently off the vocals there is also vocals a faint Vox effect on the vocals that if you listen closely you can hear it shimmer off.  The track sticks with this mellow sound as the deep vocal tone lure you into the haunting atmosphere.  The track slowly adds more instrumentation in, with the drums digging in with a 3 beat kick that keeps you patiently waiting, you know that a build up is coming and the band are savouring every moment of it.  There is a shift into a rhythm that brings a brief swing like sound until you are then into the rock element of the track where the drums come in full swing and the grungy electric guitars make their entrance.  A track that will fit any atmosphere, if you want to experience it with headphones or through speakers you will get the exact same feeling and it will be a definite song on repeat.

'The Girl with the Golden Gun' is a more rugged indie rock track that starts as it means to go on, this one has a 90s raw indie sound, with thicker instrumentation that is tightly knitted together allowing the rhythm to flow freely.  The vocals bring a more of a talking lyrical approach than singing, the south east accent coming through really makes the track unique and stand out.  This is an infectious track that will get the crowd going in a live setting.

'Am I Gonna Die?' delves into the deeper rockier vibes, big drums, intense guitar riffs and a gritty sound.  The instrumentation in the verse pulls back with the drums driving the rhythm and the electric guitars providing the melodic elements, with the bass line tones coming in stabs on the beat at the same time as the vocals which really shows off the depths that this track can go to.  The reverb adds to the atmosphere giving the track the space that brings the stadium sound.

'Nothing Here To Say' has a more ballad-esque feel to it, although the rock element is still there, the pace and atmosphere brings a more tempered sound.  The acoustic guitar starts the song, playing a chord progression that brings an emotional feeling.  The drums adding to this feeling as they bounce off and mirror the guitar line.  There is a smooth shift into the chorus as the emotions heighten with the introduction of the electric guitars and everything bounces off each other, grabbing and pulling each element in to really push out the passion.  In the second verse we hear a guitar playing a psychedelic like melody, adding in a different ending to each bar.  The vocals are low and filled with so much emotion that it is hard not to be completely captivated by them.  This is the perfect track to end the EP on as it is the calming track and they are easing you out very gently.

This is an EP that has a lot of different musical elements and styles, one thing these guys aren't afraid to do is to change up their sound in each track but stick to the core style of the band.  So as soon as you hear these songs you know exactly that it is a Spooky Goose track.
