KEVIN DANIEL CAHILL - PILOT'S CHAMBERS & OIL SEAS (DOUBLE SINGLE REVIEW)

Kevin Cahill Costello a Scottish classical/contemporary guitarist and one half instrumentalist duo Cahill Costello, released his double sided single ‘Pilot's Chambers & Oil Seas’ and get ready to be completely captivated and mesmerised by the talent of this musician.  Both tracks sit on different sides of the musical spectrum, each bringing a different mix of styles and genres.  ‘Pilot's Chambers’ brings a spine chilling rock sound with soaring melodies, big drum hits and a gritty electronic bass line that provides a muddy, intense foundation for all other elements of the track.  The song builds into a towering section of melodic guitar riffs harmonising in an eerie yet magical way and powerful drums that will put anyone listening into a spellbinding trance, you just cannot pull away.  The towering sound is then swept away at the next movement - you can hear Kevin’s classical training coming in, he's approaching these songs as classical compositions - the arrangement of the tracks sections contrasting the previous part, the seamless transition into the slower more subdued part of the song where some sampled sounds and keyboard chords calmly play, if you listen closely the keys sit off the beat and ever so slightly behind the snare hit.  We are then launched into the intensity of the electronic guitars again, this time a switch up in their sound, a different melody with a lower more grittier texture.  The track does not stop there the final section of the song switches the style up as the calm comes back in and this time with a Spanish flare, a  stunning finger picked guitar melody fills your ears with warmth and the synth pads subtly sitting in the back ground to really heighten that warm atmosphere.  This is just simply a stunning track.

Oil Seas’ delivers a luscious jazzy electronic sound, a much more chilled out and laid back rhythm and beat to 'Pilot's Chambers' the saxophone taking the lead as it transports you deep into the dreamy depths of another ethereal world.  A thick layer of synth pads kick off the song and continue all the way through, as they nestle in and hug that velvety rich sound of the saxophone.  Some electronic drums come in but sit in the background allowing the sax and synths to wash over the listener.  A simplistic electric track that is minimal in sound, packed so much depth and feeling.  Get ready to sit back and just completely unwind with this track.

One thing that you will hear in his music is the way Kevin explores a variety of different themes and influences as well as dipping into multiple styles and genres, unlocking a landscape that captures the human emotions of loss, pain, anger and melancholia.    Dark, warm, melancholic and aggressive textures are present throughout each track and it burrows itself into listeners.  Pushing the boundaries of genres to create a truly cinematic listening experience.  Both these tracks are from his forthcoming third studio album 'New World Innocence'.
