IN EARNEST

In Earnest are a alt/indie trie based in The Southend-On-Sea, they are fuelled by the songwriting of front couple Tom and Sarah, supported by multi-instrumentalist Toby.  Their influences range from alternative rock to folk, the band propel forward with their own brand of emotional, genre bending indie music.  The band have so far attracted critical praise from BBC Introducing, Atwood Magazine and EARMILK amongst other international indie press.  The band have recently released their raw double single 'Your Dog/Good Boy', which brings a change from their ethereal sound in their 2020 releases.

'Your Dog/Good Boy' both bring a stripped back, ambient and airy vibe from the acoustic guitar and piano.  'Good Boy' is a dreamy folk acoustic track with a gentle piano backbone, as it gracefully accompanies the vocals through their intimate lyrical journey.  The vocals from Tom and Sarah run alongside each other throughout and the panning of their vocals creates a spacious atmosphere, allowing the track to gradually build in intensity with the guitar and violin melodies dancing through.  The sole piano that plays, heightens the emotional atmosphere, there is a feeling of loneliness that comes through the piano melody, the delicate vocals and lyrical message will pull at your heartstrings and bring a tear to your eye, the band mention "the second track is about our other dog Doug who passed away in 2019, detailing how heartbreaking it is lose a pet." A song that will hit particularly hard for anyone who has lost a pet.

'Your Dog' is dedicated to their dog Murph, the band mention "the first track was written while sitting on our floor with our dog Murph - it's made up of all the questions we would ask her if she could talk."  Starting out with a warmly finger picked guitar melody, which is made even more homely with the subtle pick up of noises in the background from the chairs moving to Murph's collar jingling.   As you listen in to the lyrics there is a deeper meaning, one that digs into trying to understand what Murph is feeling, questions that will never be answered and ones that anyone who own pets can relate to.  There is a feeling of nostalgia that hits you with this track, a song that would fit into a montage of memories whilst it song plays out.  Tom and Sarah's vocals again run alongside each other and there is a friendliness in their tone that places you right at the heart of the song.  The violins sweeps in subtly at the beginning but as the song progresses they become more intense and bring with them an uplifting feeling that is so comforting.

Both tracks were recorded in their living room, with an analogue recorder and a lockdown collaboration with Toby who brings harmonium and violin into the track, which was recorded at his home.  The band say "We recorded the songs spontaneously with Murph by our side and the dog paintings hanging next to us on the wall.  We wanted the homely feel of the recordings to seep into the tracks."
