SPEAK EASY CIRCUS
Speak Easy Circus are an experimental indie/funk outfit from the East End of Glasgow. They bring a sound of chaotic crescendos and eclectic overtures, a celebration of the strange and the new. These guys are a breath of fresh air for anyone who is into their never-the-same-way-twice musical curiosity and funky grooves. The band consists of Jack Avison (guitar/vocals/keys), Jon Wallace (sax/keys), Frazer Laurie (drums) and Chatonda Ridley (bass). The guys released their debut EP 'Bravo Tango Charlie' into the world in 2019 which was excitedly received and drew comparisons to a host of artists of different genres such as Earth, Wind and Fire, The Libertines, Vulfpeck, Frank Zappa and Snarky Puppy. Following their sell out shows at King Tuts in Glasgow, the band alongside their phenomenal brass section released the single 'Neon in Daylight' in April 2020 too much acclaim, reviews and airtime throughout radio stations across Glasgow and Scotland. Now the guys are pack with their latest single the funk fusion 'Lions Should Hunt'.'Lions Should Hunt' is an eclectic mixture of genres that is unlike anything you have heard and the electricity that runs through it, will pull you right in. The track begins with a whirl guitar melody and some jazzy stabs from the brass section, with the vocals following shortly after, the drums and bass line adds to the songs depths bringing in the indie rocks sounds. The driving indie rhythm combining with the punchy jazzy tones sends a danceable upbeat energetic vibe through your body and you fall right into the groove. As the track progresses it builds to a jazz filled instrumental break and the switch from the indie rock bass/percussive line to a groovy off beat rhythm with a smooth saxophone solo that completely takes over and takes you dancing to the end of the song. They bring a tongue-and cheek attitude, funky rhythm with danceable grooves, but behind those upbeat vibes the lyrics tell a deeper more serious story. Something that the band commented on saying that "Lions Should Hunt' was written after seeing yet another advert featuring an attractive women seductively selling a product" they then went on to say that they were "sick of hearing that men are little more than animals who can't control their urges". The guys thought "that all sounds too depressing" so they turned the song into "an upbeat dance funk anthem" by adding in those groovy beats "we decided to add in some banging beats and funky horns". There is a chaos and unpredictability around this track and it's fantastically arranged in a way that shows their complete understanding of their craft and the music that they are conveying. They have created a fresh new sound sound that will quickly get into the heads of many and they just draw you in with their funky rock style. Jazz, rock and funk all in one track? even just putting those genres side by side in a sentence intrigues you in to listen and I can certainly say that you will not be disappointed.
