NOT NOW NORMAN and GEO MOON- RUN BOY (SINGLE REVIEW)
Not Now Norman return with their 'Run Boy', the band collaborated with musician and producer Geo Moon to bring a track that intertwines multiple genres.
The song dips into electronic, industrial, rock, cinematic and some drum n bass, you just know this track is going to be a powerful listen. The track begins with a deep pumping electronic synth line then accompanied by Taylor's siren calling vocals, becoming rich with harmonies and building up an atmosphere that completely takes over your ears and captivates you. This then falls away into the realms of an orchestral cinematic soundscape and industrial electronic hits that dance through the vocals and bounce around your head.
The orchestral strings become more intense as they push their way from the back to the front of the track, creating a building intensity and leaving you wondering where the song is going. There is then a filtered electronic synth melody that shifts the song from the atmospheric industrial and cinematic sounds to the rock and drum n bass sounds, the heavy guitar riffs run with drum pattern that brings the drum n bass vibe. The pace picks up, the depth intensifies and Taylors vocals become more fierce, they are the match that ignites the fire and leaves it burning in your head well after the song finishes. This track engulfs all your senses, the movement between the different styles and how they all fit together and flow into one another really sets this track apart.
Taylor and Geo Moon's influences both sit at opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but this helps to create and shape that 'not like anything you have heard before' sound to this track. Taylor takes her influences from the likes of Pink, The Pretty Reckless and Joan Jett, where Geo pulls in his influences from melodic techno and psychedelic-trance.
Lyrically the song takes you even deeper, as they hold so much meaning and heart, Taylor mentions: "The lyrics follow the personal story of a person going through domestic abuse. Continuously beaten down by their abuser, emotionally and physically, they come to face the reality of their situation and sees their 'partner' for the monster they truly are."
