EINSAM
Bristol born Sam Jackson brings his new solo project Einsam, written during 4 years living in Vienna. Einsam means solitary in German (literally 'onetime'), so this seemed appropriate and fitting for him since his name is Sam and also fitting with the themes of connection to and disconnection from people, places and language. Through his songs he cites producers such as Four Tet, Matt Prichard and Luke Abbott as main influences particularly in 'Train of Thought' 'Train of Thought' is definitely one of those songs that will capture you as soon as you hear it. There is a haze that sits over the instrumental, bringing those dreamy electronic moments almost as if you have lost your "train of thought". This song consumes your head with the wide use of space, the atmospheric piano melody brings a haunting tone as it plays almost in the distance, like it's not quite at the front of your mind but it is there and sneaks through every now and then. The synths are mellow and delicately placed in amongst the drums, which is continuous for the majority of song, something that Sam mentions on the track "The song is about constancy and arranged like a journey with a rolling rhythm to create a sense of motion". The sense of motion and constant movement is something you can definitely feel as the song progresses. This track doesn't sit still, there is lots of different intricate melodic moments that bounce off the drum line. As the track moves the song becomes deeper and more dense with thick tones from the bass line and low end synths, which builds on a lurking tension, that you feel right through your body. 'Stuck Pig' delves into Bristol's trip-hop heritage and Jackson's birthplace, this track has a fuzzy laid back groove with a muddy bass line oozing a deep soul that sucks you in. There is a huge injection of reverb which creates that distance and wide atmosphere, intertwined into the bass line gives the track a pull that is then carried along with the chilled out vibe from the drum beat. Sam's gritty vocal tone is what holds the whole song together, his control and delivery commands your attention for the duration of the song. You can hear influences Massive Attack coming through musically, but with Sam's own personality crafted into it and building on his own sound. The song was shaped by the effects of changing politics and rising intolerances, alongside the push and pull of the new city as well as the artist's hometown.
