CALUM BAIRD

Calum Baird is a Falkirk based independent singer-songwriter and activist.  He plays songs that tie together progressive and romantic themes in a folk music style, influenced by artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Dick Gaughan, Billy Bragg and Phil Ochs.  Calum has played around the UK and Europe at various festivals and events, as well as supporting causes and organisations with his music at home and abroad.  Over the 7 years that Calum has been in the industry, he has performed alongside Scottish musicians Dick Gaughan, Ewan McLennan, The Jellyman's Daughter and Kyle Falconer, as well as further afield with the likes of David Rovics (US), Andy Irvine (Ireland), Ryan Harvey (US), Attila the Stockbroker (UK), Grace Petrie (UK), Mariela Condo (Ecuador).

Calum released single 'The Stones of Tomorrow', in the summer of 2020 and an EP 'A View From The Notebooks' in late 2020, with both gaining lots of publicity and praise, plays across several radio stations and shows all over the UK, Ireland and more.  He began working on a new single 'Stranger Things Have Come and Gone' early in the new year.  The single is heavily influenced by the musical styles of Phoebe Bridgers and Sharon Van Etten and the singer-songwriter styles of Neil Young, who is one of Calum's main influences in his music.

'Stranger Things Have Come and Gone' was written, recorded and produced by Calum in his home studio.  The sole production of the track really captures the passion, heart and raw feelings that Calum has poured into the song.  Musically the song is mellow in pace, beginning with a sombre acoustic guitar that just has the right amount of reverb on it to create that airy ambience.  The bass line can be felt more than it can be heard and the gentle sound vibrates through your core.  The haunting feeling intensifies with a shimmering electric guitar melody, which then introduces those subtle lingering atmospheric sounds from the synth pad and adds the deep encompassing texture that you sink right in too.  Calum's raw vocals hold so much passion and his soul bearing delivery gets right inside your head as he lyrically dives into the feelings of trepidation and the anxieties particularly around the current global situation and as we prepare for the road out.

"The track is for anyone and everyone trying to come to terms with different structures of feeling thrown up by ongoing health, political and economical crises gripping much of the world.  The song, as well, taps into a mood of trepidation that is palpable as we begin to think about life after the virus and the long-term effects of these crises." - Calum Baird
