VIADUCT
Up and Coming Durham band Viaduct was formed by three friends at university who decided to make some tunes. their debut single 'There Are Days' released at the beginning of 2021, with the song initially starting out as a poem, then shared with the friends who decided to turn it into a song and over the course of making the song, it brought the lads closer and they eventually formed the band. They decided on the name Viaduct as it connects them to the the local area in which they are living in together whilst at uni - beneath the viaduct next to the train station.
'There Are Days' is so simplistic in its form, with only a sole acoustic guitar accompanying the vocals. The guitar melody plays in such a unbothersome fashion, not drawing attention to itself meaning that your focus is on the vocals and lyrics, the talk approach is so unique with the melancholy vibes and tinged with a sadness that reflects on the world we live in, but a sense of optimism for a brighter/happier future. That eerie effect and feeling you get from the talking vocals makes this songs impact more intense, which wouldn't be as strong if this song was sung. You can definitely hear the poetic features coming through and there is some similarities to the style of Simon & Garfunkel particularly in the placement of the voices and how they are panned in the mix. The movement from the two voices from the low tones to higher tones creates such a haunting atmosphere that pulls you right in. As the song comes to a close this is when we hear more instrumentation coming in with a distant kick drum and piano, although brief it brings the song to a satisfying conclusion.
