THREE DAY MONK
Three Day Monk is the solo project of Bedfordshire based multi-instrumentalist Tristan Nelson. He brings a unique sound that is driven through reflection of endeavouring & consumption. His music is predominantly rock, however he dives into different genres such as grunge, psyche, neo-soul, blues. After various appearances solo and in a two-piece in local venues over some years, the Three Day Monk solo project came to fruition amidst the longing desire to create music that knew no restrictions. He then met Matty Moon (engineer/producer for Lonely the Brave, False Heads), and the pair have worked together on all tracks. 2019 brought a lot of new material being recorded across studios in Cambridgeshire, which brought about the debut single 'Take'. With the pandemic disrupting plans for a conventional record release, the plans for the unreleased material came to a halt. Tristan wanted to be pushed creatively and a desire to release music in short bursts felt relative at the time, releasing debut EP 'Natsu' in November 2020. The latest track 'I wish you were dead' incorporates a cinematic-esque vibe, captivatingly narrating the psyche of the tracks character. Influenced by artists such as Ben Howard, Hiatus Kaiyote, Incubus & Fantastic Negrito, the music contains unintentional, unconventional structures that delve into metaphorical, situational matters that ask a simple question.
'I wish you were dead' dives in deep with those melancholy feels, the haunting track has you thinking it is going in one direction, however cleverly misleads you with the abrupt change in the direction happening several times, leaving you completely unaware of where it will take you. with a stunningly sombre piano melody that only heightens that haunting atmosphere. The vocals from guest vocalist Flora Stewart are softly delivered, with eerie tones that linger in your head, allowing the instruments that surround her voice to build on that atmosphere. The blend of gothic rock and orchestral music, engulfs all your senses, with those changes in tempo throughout and those dark undertones that get right under your skin, sending shivers down your spine. The movement between rock passages to classical passages leave listeners anticipating what else this track is going to offer. He is definitely pushing the musical boundaries with his sound in this track, the mixture of different genres and how he bends and morphs them to create his unique sound that captures you and never lets go.
