THE GABRIELS
The Gabriels are a new band from the Midlands, who all share a love for pop melodies, jangly guitars and classic songwriting. The band is made up of Gudg (Vocals), Fran Feely (Bass), Leon Jones (Guitar) and Stuart Gray (Keys). The band have all known each other for a long time, but before coming together as The Gabriels each member were all part of different bands - Gudg sang with Pallenberg, Fran played with Elefant Records act The Silver Factory, Leon in Blow Up Records band Alfa 9, and Stuart was part of Fence Collective band Viva Stereo and Drone/Psych band Children of Leir. They all came together when Gudg and Fran had some songs and they asked Leon if he fancied adding some guitar, and soon after Stuart jumped on board and The Gabriels was born. They take their influences from the likes of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, C86, The Stone Roses and Teenage Fanclub, aswell as having a shared love for the 1960's culture and soundtracks. Their debut single 'Loose Canyon' was recorded during lockdown in 2020, to the background of the ongoing pandemic. The band are currently recording heir debut album and live gigs are also planned. 'Loose Canyon' is definitely a jukebox tune, that brings a little bit of everything from those beachy/psychedelic guitar melodies that sit in the background giving the track that trippy 60's atmosphere, alongside those grungy 90s sounds coming through in the drum beat and pop rhythms in the bass/ line,. The vocals from Gudg are equally as 60s in their style, they are not right in your face, more they blend in with the instrumental but this does not take your focus away from them at all. They actually hold your attention with the calm delicate delivery, a rock edginess, with slight haunting undertones. The song keeps the same feel for the majority of the track with those laid back vibes, as the song approaches the finish, the atmosphere builds to a groovy danceable instrumental of shimmery guitars, funky bassline and drums. This song and this band will definitely send you on a trip of nostalgia musically and visually, and will have you completely captivated by their style that oozes everything 60s. A definite escape to another world type of track. As Gudg mentions: "This song is about escapism, this year more than any we've all probably felt the need to escape. As a band we love the 1960s Laurel canyon Scene and would have loved to have been part of it. It was a time where it felt like anything could happen both socially and musically and as a band it's a big influence on us".
