SOPHIA

Singer songwriter Sophia comes from the North East of England, spending the last year developing her sound and growing her following.  She had released 5 tracks over the year (which have now been removed from all streaming services) as Sophia starts a new chapter in her musical journey.  The  tracks allowed her to find her feet within her music, how she approaches the project and is now beginning to grow a presence in the local music scene and beyond.  She has already received acclaim from North East tastemakers NARC Magazine and Spark Radio as well as constant support from BBC Introducing.  Her latest pop inspired single 'Skin' she worked alongside producer Alfie Cattell (Moodbay), who has truly allowed Sophia to capture the musical elements she needs to complement her vocals.  Despite creating the track over zoom, together they have created and developed Sophia's signature sound.

She describes the feeling of the track: "I wanted it to be a really atmospheric, slightly haunting but warm at the same time and I like to think that we've achieved that"

'Skin' is an all round gorgeous song, it starts with a delicate piano melody and a graceful guitar melody, both panned to the either side of the track to create a beautiful wide sound and a spacious airy atmosphere that is so calming, you just find yourself closing your eyes and drifting along with the song.   The soft vocals from Sophia are elegantly delivered yet hold a lot of raw emotion within them.  This was something that Sophia found to be a challenge and she describes how working alone when writing allowed her to create an honest output:

"Sharing your words can be scary,  working alone allows me to feel safe and truly express my thoughts.  'Skins' explores my emotions, being in a situation where someone who once made you feel at home just doesn't anymore, how you can no longer see them in the same light and how there's just no going back".

The record crackle effect heard over the song gives it that vintage vibe, where you can imagine it playing on a vinyl record player in a cosy room, with the fire on.   The track gradually builds and becomes more intense as it progresses with the addition of a steady drumbeat and the added synth moments intensify the tranquil atmosphere.  I just love the gentle tone and the warm welcoming feeling that you get as soon as you listen.
