BEFORE STORIES

Before Stories are an Aberdeen duo formed in 2015 by Colin Brennan & Jamie Reid and they bring minimal miserabilist talk rock to your ears, with their latest EP 'The Next Reason To Breathe'.  The guys mention "Our idea was to make art that said exactly what we wanted to say and then stopped, abandoning traditional song forms for enough music to make an idea a song and no more.  This has not changed in out 5 years together".  This EP is their 4th release on Ripcord Records, like everyone they are trying to make sense of a world that has dramatically changed, which is echoed not only in their lyrics but how they have created this EP.  Recorded separately in their own houses with very minimal interaction, with only emailing each other back and forth they mention "it's been a journey in accepting each others vision and having a lot less individual control over how the songs have been formed".

The first track 'Toe This Line' is a 2 minute track packed with hard hitting electric guitars and gritty fiery vocals from Jamie that hold a lot of emotions within, which you can feel as soon as he starts singing.  The song begins with a distant cymbal, then joined by an aggressive repetitive guitar riff that drives the track and stays pretty much consistent through out.  The drums sit just to the back and continues to keep that fast driving tempo going.

'Born Below The Tide' brings a more punk style, the talking vocals from Jamie starts out calm and conversational, gradually building up intensity where his vocals become hard and ferocious, which feel they are intended to evoke emotions from the listeners.  The guitar riff is not as aggressive, it sits towards the back of the track, allowing the vocals to come through.  The song comes to an abrupt sudden end, which will take listeners by surprise.

'Hutl' begins with a mellow modulating guitar, layered with emotive talking vocals from Jamie, who talks about very serious and hard hitting topics in the track, one being poverty "the future looks the same as the past and the present, they sleep walk from one day to the next, shut off from decision making, shut out from industry takings.  The life that was once lived here, was prosperous and its a far cry from luxury".  The heart wrenching tone of this track keeps you locked onto the lyrics and you listen to every single word he is saying.

'1 Like = 1 Prayer' brings a more uptempo beat with a deep lo fi groovy bassline and energetic grungy fuzzy electric guitars.  The track takes a look into the world of social media, with the lyrics shouting "The glorious design, now it's a f***ing cesspit".  Which shows the way in which social media has turned and became a place that can be filled with more negatives than positives at times.

'X99' begins with a groovy drum beat and electric guitar riff, this guitar riff being the main riff that reappears throughout the track.  The different styles of guitars in this track makes for an interesting listen.  The guitar riff that is completely engulfed in reverb, creates a spacious atmospheric depth to the track.  Again Jamie delivers on the attention grabbing fiery vocals, with the intensity of the track rising and rising as the song progresses.  We also hear the voice of Colin for the first time, which brings a contrast in vocal style as he sings alongside Jamie.

'Come To Pass'  starts out with a delicate guitar riff, layered with Jamie's heart wrenching vocals.  The track takes a calmer route in comparison to the last few tracks, the lyrics delve into a more personal tone where Jamie looks at his own perceptions "Morning comes around again with oh familiar haze, if I didn't see it everyday I'm scared I would forget your face, like I forget the purpose I had envisioned for this day, can't seem to put a finger on any good that I have made". The track then picks up pace with the addition of gritty and grungy guitars and punchy drums along with the return of Jamie's intense lyrics which has been a prominent feature through out this EP.

This entire EP has a mix of different styles, that anyone who listens will enjoy the diverse changes in tone and rhythm throughout.  It is an authentic and completely unique body of work that will no doubt attract a lot of attention!
