VOLCANIC BRASS
Volcanic Brass is the creative project of Warrington based multi instrumentalist Scott Laywood, which came around when Scott took time out from his other projects. He re-discovered his trumpet playing skills during lockdown, where he decided, instead of playing golf on his time off from recording, to use this time to stay in the studio recording trumpet parts. After playing around with different instruments, recording percussion, guitar, vocal stings, drum loops, synth bass and sample elements, Scott had created an exciting funk instrumental which he called 'The Floor is Lava'. The more he listened to the track, he thought that it would suit a rap hook over the top of it. Which led him to connecting with, rap collective Thoughtune (who is also based in Warrington) sending the instrumental through to David McFadden (AKA EvilA and founder of Thoughtune), who was extremely excited when he heard the track and instantly felt inspired and within the hour David had sent his first verse idea back to Scott. The track was then fully complete within a day and given a new name 'Consoled Forts'.
The track is just a pure groove, the combination of an upbeat rhythm, and chill vibe works so well together, one that you will definitely be bopping your head along to! The rap vocals on top of the instrumental and the drums add the groovy upbeat rhythm, with the trumpets and the guitar riff creating the chilled vibe as-well as keeping in with the groovy beat. One thing I do really love is the simple yet cleverly placed sampled elements, they fit incredibly well and adds a quirkiness and uniqueness to the track! You feel yourself getting carried away with the beat and then before you know it the song ends so you need to play it again! Definitely a track you will have on repeat!
To break it down, the first verse on the track sets the scene of two artists from 'a town unknown' coming together to create something brand new and exciting. The chorus and track as a whole takes inspiration from video games, you can hear samples from 'Super Mario Brothers' being used, which Scott added in. EvilA went with this theme, throwing in as many Mario/video game references as possible "You ain't on my level", "Coming to your block" (Mario the plumber coming to fix your blockage!), "There isn't mushroom to be bigger than you are". There are plenty more in there so go and have a listen to this track! During post production Scott added some 'bit crusher' distortion to EvilA's vocals to give it the video game effect! It is subtle within the mix throughout, but stands out more towards the end of the track when the instrumental drops away.
